What is a feed?

RSS feeds stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary, or XML feeds, a standard coding language for swapping text between applications on the Net.

If you want to know when a cool new article, blog post, or discussion thread appears on your favorite Web sites without checking these sites religiously or having emails stuff your inbox, you can subscribe to specific "feeds" that are collected or "aggregated" in one handy place to read when you feel like it.

How to read feeds

If you want to subscribe to feeds, there are over 2,000 different free or paid online, mobile, and desktop applications, aka "aggregators" or "news readers" out there that will display your feeds. Personalized homepages like "My Yahoo" or "Google Homepage" are currently the most user-friendly way to read feeds.

If you use Internet Explorer 7, Firefox, Mac Safari or Opera, these browsers also have a simple feed reader built in.
